Perspectives on Teaching in Different Contexts

TESOL is now accepting proposals for a new series that will consist of 80-page books addressing the challenges specific to certain contexts for teaching English language learners.

Scope and Purpose of the Series

The Perspectives on Teaching in Different Contexts series is aimed at raising awareness of the challenges that are specific to a given teaching context both within and outside the United States, from intensive English programs (IEPs) to private tutoring. The books will use concise, accessible language to identify the needs of the learners within a given context and then explain which lesson formats, strategies, and resources most effectively address those needs.

For details on the Perspectives series please see the articles in the 14 August 2013 and 13 September 2013 editions of TESOL’s English Language Bulletin.

Audience

The audience for the series includes preservice and in-service English language teachers (ELTs). The series will be particularly useful for those completing their teacher training and considering employment opportunities. The language and content should also be appropriate for experienced language educators who are preparing to teach in a new context and would like to learn what can be transferred and what needs to be adapted.

Series Format

The project is envisioned as a series of 80-page books, each addressing a different teaching context. Topics limited to a certain geographical region(s) will be considered.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

- Intensive English programs (IEPs) at universities
- Intensive English programs (IEPs) at private language schools
- Community colleges
- Adult education
- Business English for corporations
- English for specific purposes (ESP)
- K–12 programs (including large groups in an EFL setting)
- Early-childhood programs
- Private tutoring (face-to-face and online)
- Boarding schools

Length: 80 pages/book (about 20,000 words)

Section parts

Each book will follow a similar format consisting of the following sections:

- Explanation of the needs of ELLs within the context
- Other concerns (e.g., administrative challenges)
- Lesson planning: format, materials needed, available resources, objectives, procedures, classroom/ teaching strategies, and assessments
- Questions for reflection

Authors

Authors should be ELT professionals who have considerable teaching experience in their respective contexts.

Please submit a 500-word proposal for initial consideration by 30 September 2013. E-mail one copy of the proposal, a current CV, and contact information to:

Proposal Guidelines

The proposal must include:

A 500-word summary of the proposed topic that describes the following:

- Explanation of concerns specific to a teaching context
- Suggestions for strategies and resources that best meet the needs of ELLs in that context.
- A list of conferences or professional meetings at which parts or all of the contents have been presented.

Proposals will be judged on the appropriateness for the series format.

TESOL asks all contributors to assign their copyright to the Association. The author(s) will be asked to sign a contract during the production cycle for the book. Please do not submit work that has been previously published, is currently under consideration elsewhere, or is already under contract, and do not submit work for which you wish to retain copyright.

¡Viva Chile! “I Live In Chile” is expected to be available at midnight tonight! Wow, the book is ready way ahead of schedule. This is a Fiestas Patrias book, a celebration of Chile, her language, her people, her culture, her traditions and her customs.

All of this is told through the story of the protagonists (Gaby my wife, my family and myself), giving me a way to narrow the story to my own personal reality, as I have experienced Chile to be, in reality, over the past 12 years. I have condensed 12 years of my life into 100 pages, selecting the story that I needed to tell, finding some way to include what every person expects from a memoir such as this, while ensuring that I would surprise you, again and again. In spite of this, the story remains a story that could just as easily be your own story.

The most important thing now is to give thanks to everyone who supported me and helped me (in any way) to make this book a reality.

For example, when I asked for help with the book cover, you were there with suggestions, recommendations, and advice. Your help was greatly appreciated. This book is just as much yours as it is mine, it is Our book, WE have written it together…

We discovered that we preferred a book about real people, not just another beautiful landscapes of Chile book. Everybody knows Chile is beautiful, but what about her people? Are the people just as beautiful as Chile the country is? Answer: YES…

My friends, you helped me to understand that this book needed to be, more than anything, a book about people. At the same time, the magnificence of Chile, as a country and as a paradise on Earth (yes, paradise), needed to come into place, to be dealt with, to merge or weave into the overall narrative. I know you will be pleased with the storytelling style I use, a mixed-genre, Chilean style.

It is creative, making use of historical sources, personal narrative, the visual and the audiovisual, taking maximum advantage of the tools available to storytellers nowadays. Visual interpretation, at times, is the only tool needed, and I leave it to you to form your own interpretations, when my voice falls silent…

In Chile, you can not ignore Mother Nature, which has been so abundantly generous to Chile. No matter what it is that you enjoy most, here in Chile, you will find whatever your heart desires.

The common thread through out the book is one of narrative, of experience. There is affection, in fact there is love, in the most unimigainable places, in this book. I leave you to discover these aspects, for what one man has come to cherish and love is a matter of taste. In spite of this, love itself can not be denied, not here, not in this book, which could easily be described as a love story…

Historically, Chile first declared her independence from her colonial master, Spain, on the 18th of September, 1810. That means that Chile is a young nation, especially when compared with the various nations of the old country, Europe, such as Spain, Germany, France, etc.

Yet do not let Chile’s young age fool you. She is as mature as can be expected for a country that was fortuitously placed at the end of the Earth. I remind you, that incredulously, Chile’s borders include the Great Atacama desert, in the North, the driest desert in the world, as well as the Antarctic, one of the coldest regions on Earth, in the South.

What Is Chile Like?

What is Chile Like? ¿Como es Chile? La Casa Nueva (Tito Fernandez)

I am an experiential writer. I write from experience, true to what I have seen, experienced, felt, enjoyed, lived, etc. Writing is real, and nothing is more real than life itself.

As you can imagine, an experiential writer like myself has little need for invention. The stories I tell are alive within my memory. For example, as I look at the picture above, of Tito Fernandez, affectionately known as "El Temucano" by his countrymen, and my memory is alive with the sights, smells and sounds of my beloved Chile.

Even without the picture, I assure you my friend, my memory will always and forever hold a special place for Mr. Tito Fernandez.

"For what reasons?", you might ask.

"The music, yes, the culture, too", I must answer with affection.

Yet, there are further, more deeply personal reasons, that I shall disclose in my new book, "I Live In Chile". Yet let us turn our attention elsewhere, for the moment.

I am speaking of my motivation for the writing of "I Live In Chile". I am aware that many people will be extremely satisfied to have a book like this, written from an "outside" perspective, of someone on the "inside". I achieve this seemingly impossible feat due to my status as an immigrant, foreign born, not a native son, yet an appreciative "adopted child".

As you can see, this book will be one that will be a must-read, for the native born Chilean. This book is also a must-read, for the foreigner, who has heard much about Chile, yet in reality, knows very little about Chile.

Yes, it is true, we have heard much about the culture of Chile, in the "Big C" tradition of holidays, festivals, food, music, and social behavior (Big C) way that we learn about all foreign cultures.

Yet in this book, it is the "Little C", the deep culture, present in the language, in the way we dress, look, walk, talk, feel, think, and interact with one another. I dare say, the Little C of Chilean culture will fascinate you, as it has me, for the past decade.

To be honest, I have been adopted by Chile, and from this unique viewpoint, I hope to share what my Chile is like. Indeed, the great folk singer, Tito Fernandez, once explained how difficult it was for him to answer the question, "¿Como es Chile?" (What is Chile Like?) when he was asked by a young child, in Canada, who had been born of Chilean parents, but had never been physically in Chile.

What is she like? Who is she? Where is she?

I hope to shed light on such questions in this book, which will be coming out in the next 14 days.
